It was still March the last time the Fort Hays State University
tennis team played, and with the colder weather still hanging around,
Wednesday’s nonconference dual against Newman University wasn’t made
any easier.
Still, the Tigers were able to work on their overall game, and did it with little to worry about as they defeated Newman, 8-1.
“It’s hard to get motivated because of the weather, but we pulled
through and played well,” Fort Hays No. 2 singles player senior Helen
Harris said. “It’s nice to have a couple of wins. The (Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association) is a lot harder. It built self
confidence, and we got to work on the basic stuff.”
Harris, who will be one of two seniors playing their final home
match Saturday against Northwest Missouri State University, finished
singles against Newman’s Erica Lopez with a 6-1, 7-5 win. In No. 2
doubles, she teamed with freshman Rebekah Lynn to beat Kacie Brown and
Liz Seiler, 8-1. Junior Kris Marten and freshman Mary Kate McKee also
won their doubles match over the Jets’ Kelly Rutherford and Sara Allen,
8-1 in the No. 3 doubles match. Fort Hays senior MaryAnne Talbott and
sophomore Brette Baldwin won the No. 1 doubles match 8-2 against Dixie
Matzen and Lopez.
The only loss the Tigers had was Talbott falling to Matzen in No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-0, (10-8).
“Today it was windy, but we were lucky we got to play,” Talbott said
of the team having to reschedule more than one meet this spring. “We’ve
had some bad luck this season. We have to make up a lot of matches
before the MIAA tournament, so lucky we got it in today even though it
rained.”
The dual started late because of the rain, but once the teams were able to play, Fort Hays dominated the Jets.
McKee, playing No. 6 singles, defeated Allen 6-0, 6-0. Lynn, Baldwin
and Marten each won at least one set 6-0 in the No. 3, 4, 5 matches.
“It was a workmanlike day,” Fort Hays coach Brian Flax said. “It
wasn’t the greatest. But, having two rain delays, and the wind the way
it was, and they had some pretty good players at the top. It was a
good, tough match.”
The Tigers are scheduled to play at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Fort
Hays courts, but in case of bad weather, they will play at the indoor
courts at Barton County Community College in Great Bend starting at 9
a.m.
