Tigers Building Toughness in Middle of Heat Wave
8/14/2007
With five straight days of 100+ degree heat and no end in sight, Tiger head
football coach Kevin Verdugo has pushed his players through grueling
practices and now they are hanging their hats on the work done in the
heat. “The hotter the day, the better the practices,” said Verdugo. “We
are preaching mental toughness to our players and playing through the
ups and downs of a game. Just like our summer workouts, the higher the
thermometer goes, the higher our productivity and intensity go. I am
extremely proud of our players as they are stepping up to the challenge
in a way that I have never seen.”
With the recent heat wave, the turf at Lewis Field Stadium has
consistently ranged from 120 to 140 degrees. Brian Razak, head athletic
trainer, and Verdugo have worked together to orchestrate practices that
provide the Tigers with the best opportunity for safety and
improvement. The players weigh in and out every practice to measure
fluids lost and fluids gained. After finding out the heat wave is
expected to be here the weekend of August 25th, in which the Tigers
open up their season by hosting Western State in the Holiday Inn
Kickoff Classic, Verdugo finished by saying “the expected heat will be
great. Our players know the forecast for Western Kansas in August and
September. Their confidence and conditioning are growing with each
passing day and they are excited about the possibility for plenty of
warm Saturdays this fall.”
