When Tigers Roared

Brian Flax
Head Coach

Brian Flax begins his 12th year as the head tennis coach at Fort Hays State University in 2007-08. Flax ranks as the all-time leader in coaching victories at FHSU with 106 wins. Last season, Flax led FHSU into their first season as members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), in which the Lady Tigers finished sixth at the MIAA Tournament held in St. Joseph, Missouri. The team also finished the season ranked tenth in the North Central Region Rankings.

Flax reached a coaching milestone with his 100th victory on April 15, 2006, at Colorado Christian University. The Lady Tigers won their first ever RMAC Tournament match in 2006 by defeating Metro State in the first round. That same season he led FHSU to an 11-5 record, including a perfect 4-0 record in the fall of 2005.

In 2004-05, Flax led the Lady Tigers to a 12-11 record. The Lady Tigers ended the 2004 fall season ranked eighth in the North Central Region, their highest NCAA ranking ever. Flax was RMAC Co-Coach of the Year along with David Elliott of Mesa State in 2004-05. During the 2000-01 season he coached the Lady Tigers to a 13-10 record, including a perfect 9-0 fall season. He also led the Lady Tigers to a 13-10 record and a tie for third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference during the 1998-99 season. During that season, he guided the FHSU team to a first-ever North Central Regional ranking of 19th. He currently serves as the chair of the ITA North Central Regional Ranking Committee.

A graduate of Trego Community High School in WaKeeney, Kansas, he was a two-time all-state selection in tennis and helped lead the Golden Eagles to a state runner-up finish in 1987. After high school he attended Cloud County Community College where he played baseball and tennis. Flax transferred to FHSU where he earned his degree in Physical Education.

Flax taught at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays for two years before joining the FHSU Tennis coaching staff prior to the 1996-97 season. He has since completed a master's degree in Physical Education.
